Client: Museum of Science & Industry, Manchester
Job: Restoration of a William Peel Beam Engine, and Installation in a new Gallery
Scope of Work
The job entailed removing the Beam Engine from Helmshore Industrial Museum. We then transported it back to our works, where it was stripped down fully, the castings that were cracked in places were repaired using cast iron welding techniques, the burnished rods were polished, and the whole engine was re-built and mounted onto a steel support frame.
We then transported it to the Science Museum in Manchester, where it was skated into position and the flywheel mounted. It now resides in the new gallery on show to hundreds of visitors weekly.
